How to Make the Most of Your Winter Break

We feel like winter break can go two ways:

1.       Overwhelmingly too fast from doing so many activities and traveling to visit multiple relatives over the holidays.

2.       Or, agonizingly slow, either because the holidays can’t come fast enough, or because you don’t have much to do at all, so you end up bored at home.

So, whether you’re looking for things to do with your relatives, or just need to do something to pass the time, we have a few ideas on how to make your winter break one for the books.

Have a Winter Family Olympics Week

Let the games begin! Prepare a family-friendly competition for each night of the week. From Gingerbread house decorating to Holiday-themed Bingo, to a paper snowflake-making challenge, rack up the points and see who has the most medals at the end of the week. The winner gets bragging rights until the next family Olympics during summertime!

Have an All-Out Bonfire and Movie Night

It can get pretty chilly here in Aberdeen at this time of year. But that doesn’t mean you have to spend all winter indoors! Grab or find a video projector, a bonfire pit, and all the snacks. Pick from a Christmas classic, or just your go-to feel-good film suited for the whole family to screen on your living room wall. Afterward, head outside to use a fire pit. It will keep your toes nice and warm, and hopefully be used to roast some marshmallows. Our favorite part: build the ultimate hot cocoa bar. Make a tray with all the toppings and fixings you can think of that will satisfy every guest! We recommend mini marshmallows (of course), mini chocolate chips, cinnamon sticks, crushed candy cane bits, whipped cream, toffee or other chocolate bar crumbles, and all the sauces your heart desires.

Get Outside

We know spending time outdoors isn’t what comes to mind regularly during winter, but spending some time outdoors even in small chunks of time is good for you! Go for walks with the family, see who can build the best snowman, try a snowshoe hike, make snow angels, or take a go at skiing or snowboarding with a class at a ski resort if there’s one in the area. If you’re traveling down south for the holidays, work together to build the best sandman at the beach or local playground. Smell the crisp, winter air!

Donate to Those in Need

‘Tis the season of giving! We all love shopping for our loved ones this time of year, but it’s also nice to think of those in not as fortunate positions and scenarios. Help your loved ones gather things that they don’t really use or see if you have any duplicates of non-perishables in your pantry. Drop them off at a local shelter or supply drive to give back to your community.

Go to Local Holiday Events
